The awesome Nedry built up in intensity as the set went along, Ayu’s fantastic voice supplementing Matt and Chris’s catchy beats.

Shooting notes
The light filling the stage was quite bland, and a few spots on the musicians would have been welcomed. However, it meant I could get away at 2200 IS0 and relatively high speeds, with only minor adjustements during the editing. I tried to close a bit more than the usual 2.8 and it worked fairly well most of the time. I got a bit carried away though, and didn’t realize that some of my pictures were a bit too dark for their own sake… read below:

High ISO on a D700 is fine, as long as you don’t have to recover too much…
What I mean here is that you kinda have to be close enough to your final image when you shoot. Let’s consider those 2 examples, both taken at 2200 ISO:

You can see here that the histogram is heavily skewed towards the left, and that it won't go very well when I'll try to bring it back to the land of living

This one is looking healthier, and the small adjustements I will do afterwards won't do much harm

See below the full-size versions after adjustements of the two photos above:

Nikon D700 + 24-70 f/2.8 | 1/100 sec at f/4.5 | ISO 2200

Nikon D700 + 24-70 f/2.8 | 1/100 sec at f/4.5 | ISO 2200

Nikon D700 + 24-70 f/2.8 | 1/60 sec at f/3.2 | ISO 2200

Nikon D700 + 24-70 f/2.8 | 1/60 sec at f/3.2 | ISO 2200

The first one has a grainy feeling, which some people might like better, but that’s a question of taste. Bottomline is, I was too dark on the first take and the post-processing added noise. Note that if I had had those exact histograms at 1600 ISO, the result wouldn’t have been that grainy in the first picture.

Lesson learned
Good idea to mess around with higher speeds and higher apertures, but the higher ISO you’re at, the more careful you have to be when you play in the dark zone.

  1. You did a great job in the recovery. It’s so easy to rattle off shots and assume the exposure will be spot on, especially in difficult situations like this. The final images are great.

  2. [...] Staying in the dark black&white mood from the last post. I liked the lights at this Nedry gig, very different from the one at the Good Ship. [...]
