Nedry is a fantastic band. Matt and Chris take you to some fantastic place between Air and Boards of Canada, and Ayu gently adds her mesmerizing voice.

They were playing at Ginglik, a great venue which is still fighting for its survival.

Shooting notes:
It was probably the most challenging venue I’ve ever shooted in. It wasn’t just sombre, it was dark. The little fog machine didn’t help and was blurring the faces even more.
I was a bit too keen to try out my new 24-70 f/2.8, which made things even harder than if I had stuck to my good ol’ 50mm f/1.8. However, it was a good opportunity to push the D700 to its limits, ISO-wise. As you can see on the first shot, it performed well and the moderate amount of noise at 2200 ISO adds a nice ‘grainy’ feeling.
The main difficulty was getting something ‘out’ of the available light, which wasn’t much at all, and was mostly some kind of red’ish halo. This kind of mood is usual but normally you also get:
Here, none of the above, which made things tricky. This is where a flash can come in very handy, but the few tries I did were unsuccessful and I didn’t want to spend too much time fiddling with my settings while the band was playing.

[...] Witchy is the word that comes to mind when you first hear and see Voynaru. They gave for their first gig a very original performance, using powerful strings (cello & violin), subtle and steady drums, and transe-like vocals (by Ayu Okakita, whom you can also hear in a different style with Nedry).
