Fallenfest @ La Cigale, Paris – Stoned Popes, 2009 Winners

Fallenfest Stones Popes, 28 Jun 2009 - 01

I heard about the Fallenfest festival through Thomas, a friend of mine trumpetist in Stoned Popes. Fallenfest is a competition for upcoming bands in Paris and its area. They get to play at really nice venues as they progress through the competition, and this year, the final leg was at La Cigale, a major venue in Paris.

I was lucky enough to follow Stoned Popes throughout the day, starting backstage in the afternoon and finishing when the winners got announced. As it turns out, they were the winners, so bravo again to them.

Car Park – Malta International Airport

I spotted this empty car park from the bus, and liked its yellow lines under the blue maltese sky.

Wandering around an airport with an SLR is probably one of the best way to get arrested and miss one’s flight, so I was very quick, almost instinctive, and I hope the pictures go well together.

Nedry @ The Dublin Castle, 14 Jun 2009

Nikon D700 + 50mm f/1.8 | 1/160sec at f/1.8 | ISO 1100

Nikon D700 + 50mm f/1.8 | 1/160sec at f/1.8 | ISO 1100

Staying in the dark black&white mood from the last post. I liked the lights at this Nedry gig, very different from the one at the Good Ship.

Good crowd turn out, tighter set, things are coming together at a steady pace, and I can’t wait for their album to come out (August!).

The Marvis in Black&White @ Monto Water Rats, 23 May 2009

Nikon D700 + 24-70 f/2.8 | 1/80sec at f/4.5 | ISO 1600

Nikon D700 + 24-70 f/2.8 | 1/80sec at f/4.5 | ISO 1600

I’ve taken a lot of photos of The Marvis, and also a lot of photos at Monto Water Rats so I thought that it would be good to have some kind of consistency on this set, rather than the usual sepia/colour/black&white. So they’re all black&white.

I like the extra sharpness on the shots taken with the apertures above 3.5, especially the two portraits of Ed, the lead singer.

Seiji and his band, the Tower Tavern, 23 May 2009

Nikon D700 + 50mm 1.8 | 1/200sec at f/1.8 | ISO 2200

Nikon D700 + 50mm 1.8 | 1/200sec at f/1.8 | ISO 2200

Nikon D700 + 50mm 1.8 | 1/200sec at f/1.8 | ISO 2200

Nikon D700 + 50mm 1.8 | 1/200sec at f/1.8 | ISO 2200

Funny story here: I bumped into Seiji on my way to shoot another gig, The Marvis, playing at Monto Water Rats. Now, I used to play with The Marvis (I was the drummer) and guess what, so did Seiji, who was the drummer after me.

He no longer plays with them either and found this other band with whom he had only rehearsed once, on the morning of the gig, and he totally rocked it that night.

I don’t play that much drums anymore, but hey, I take pictures.

Oh yeah, I don’t remember the name of the band but neither did Seiji when I asked him…

The awesome Nedry built up in intensity as the set went along, Ayu’s fantastic voice supplementing Matt and Chris’s catchy beats.

Voynaru @ The Cross Kings, 10 May 2009

Nikon D700, 50mm f/1.8 | 1/40sec at f/1.8 | ISO 3200

Nikon D700, 50mm f/1.8 | 1/40sec at f/1.8 | ISO 3200

Witchy is the word that comes to mind when you first hear and see Voynaru. They gave for their first gig a very original performance, using powerful strings (cello & violin), subtle and steady drums, and transe-like vocals (by Ayu Okakita, whom you can also hear in a different style with Nedry).

They are not the classic indie band (what? no guitar??), and it’s a very good thing.

Nedry @ Ginglik, 9th May 2009

Nikon D700 + 24-70 f/2.8 | 1/50sec at f/3.2 | ISO 2200

Nikon D700 + 24-70 f/2.8 | 1/50sec at f/3.2 | ISO 2200

Nedry is a fantastic band. Matt and Chris take you to some fantastic place between Air and Boards of Canada, and Ayu gently adds her mesmerizing voice.
